A LETTER FROM OUR ANDRE HOUSE DIRECTOR
To the Andre House Community,

Needless to say the last week has been heart-wrenching for so many of you.  Many questions have arisen in terms of how you can help continue to serve our community down here in the “zone.”  First and foremost, we need your prayers to continue to be able to serve our guests’ basic needs by providing meal service and basic hygiene needs including access to restrooms and shower facilities.  Andre House continues to fulfill its mission of feeding the hungry and welcoming the stranger.

One of the ramifications of the orders from Governor Ducey and Mayor Gallego regarding restaurant and business closures fall on many people who find themselves out of a job.  A friend from elementary school recently posted on Facebook that she is out of a job for the first time in 15 years as she ran the catering department for a steakhouse outside of Philadelphia.  There are many others who will have similar experiences and many who will arrive at our doors asking for assistance.  We remain committed to serving the most vulnerable in our community.

In these uncertain times, one of our challenges is continuing to perform all of our services while also performing the administration tasks associated with Andre House.  We are blessed to have an exceptional and dedicated team.  However, the reality of the situation, after consulting especially with Br Richard who has served the community for so many year was recognizing that we can’t do it all.  So we are focusing on the essentials.   We will continue to serve dinner six nights a week in addition providing access to our restrooms and shower facilities. We also continue to welcome people outside at our porter station by offering backpacks, hygiene packs, blankets and cell phone charging.  Our parking lot is set up as much as it can be for social distancing.  We’ve moved our benches around the parking lot to create more space for our guests to spread themselves out.

Until further notice, we’ve suspended our laundry service as well as other clothing closet except in emergency situations.  We needed to streamline our services when we asked many of you not to come to Andre House for an extended period of time to volunteer.  The decision to ask volunteers to not come to Andre House was a very difficult one.  We know that Andre House was founded upon the shoulders of many of you.  But, our team felt it was necessary to at least attempt to ensure your health as well as the health of our guests by limited access to our building.

The situation surrounding this virus seems to change by the day if not by the hour.  We will continue to fulfill our mission until we are told otherwise.  In the meantime, we do need your support – through your prayers, through your donations towards our needs that are listed on our website and updated daily and through your monetary donations. I want to thank you in advance for your generosity across these three fronts.

In gratitude,

Rev. Dan Ponisciak

The health and safety of our guests, volunteers and staff are upmost importance. We honor the dignity and value of everyone we come in contact with. Our organization is built upon volunteers and is in service for the most vulnerable of populations. We have put measures in place at this time to best serve and protect our guests as well as our volunteers. As of Tuesday, March 17th we not be engaging any of our volunteers. This will go on until Mid April. We will still be serving meals and providing essential services for our guests experiencing homelessness. We will be updating this page regularly. Please download our updates PDF for our preparedness plan.
